As the daughter of a refugee, I’m interested in the social and intimate consequences of political violence. Through collage, I explore the fractured worlds experienced by those subject to seemingly omnipotent forces. My materials include my own salvaged drawings, paintings, and photographs of natural forms—from still lifes to landscapes to figures—as well as found photographs and ephemera. I deconstruct and reassemble these images to evoke not only the intrusiveness of trauma in daily life but the generative impulse that can emerge in response as well. The work is done when it holds in balance the tension between rupture and continuity, ruin and rebuilding, defeat and resistance.
