Based in Cambridge, MA, Deborah Chasman is an artist who combines photography, drawing, painting, and collage. She began exhibiting in 2025, when her work was included in the Fay Chandler Emerging Artist Exhibit in Boston, MA. Born in the US to an immigrant mother—a refugee from Nazi Germany—and American father, she keeps the experience of political violence and struggle, trauma and transcendence at the center of her artistic practice. Whether fragmented, humorous, or yearning, her work is an effort to document struggle, subvert power, and produce unexpected beauty from salvaged images.
She has a B.A. in Fine Arts, with honors, magna cum laude, from Harvard University; she also studied at the Art Students League of New York. As the editor-in-chief at Boston Review, a nonprofit political magazine, she occasionally interviews authors and writes essays. That work can be found here. Chasman spent 2018-9 as a fellow at Harvard’s Edmund J. Safra Center for Ethics.
She is currently a member of the Cambridge Art Association.
